The Fifth Book in Sabrina Strong Series will be out... Eventually

Hello, my pretties!

A pox upon me for not posting in here for a long, long time. But the other day I had someone comment on one of my last posts wondering if the fourth book was the end of the series.

Certainly not! There are 8 planned, and since we've only gotten 4 up and going, you should be looking forward to #5 some time this year. I have no time-line on it, as yet. I have delivered it to my tireless publisher, and so, when they have gone through it for edits, and I look through it one more time, and we have a cover, that book will be out for all of you to enjoy!

In the meantime, if you have bought any of these books and would like to make a review for any of these, please do so. Here is a link that would be handy to use to review any books you'd like.

And from Ascension's site in Amazon, you can click on any of the books you've missed.

I thank you all for your loyalty and patience.

Ta-ta, for now!

Charlain Harris' Dead Ever After... and Sabrina Strong Series

Hello, my pretties. I've just returned from an 8-day trip to the southwest. A nice trip but too damn short. Taos was super busy! We saw some amazing views when we took a circle drive out of there on our second day.

While I had to be passenger in the truck, while my husband did the driving, I brought along the very last book in the Sookie Stackhouse series, "Dead Ever After". I had been wanting to get this book, the moment I heard this was the last of the series. (Boo-hoo! )^; ) So, finally I bought it for something to do while we drove through boring states--states we have been through a couple dozen times in the past 28 years.

I'm more than half-way done with it, and I'm enjoying the story, as always. Never a boring read, something is always happening to Sookie. Arline, who once worked in the bar with Sookie and became a hater, is found dead in the dumpster at Merlots, and Sookie is charged with the murder--all be it a flimsy charge indeed. All her friends come out in support of her, and she is bailed out by her former boyfriend, Erik. Also, at least two people are trying to kill her. One nearly does, and she winds up with a bullet wound in the shoulder (or the arm, I can't remember now). I'm not finished with the book, so please don't ruin the ending by telling me about it.

I now have all 13 books in the Sookie Stackhous series. I'll probably read them all again, from the beginning some day. That's what I like about a series, if you are into the characters, and the story, you get lost in a series, if the author has done a good job. Harris has done a very good job.

Enough of that, now onto my series... ehem.

I remember starting out with my Sabrina Strong series. I had only planned on three books, in the very beginning. But then, after the second one, I knew I had more in me than three. However, I wondered how many books I'd be able to write. Each time I finished one, I didn't think I had another one in me--well, another one began forming in my head before long. Scenes between characters played out like little motion pictures and I had to sit and write them out before the whole thing was gone.

I'm currently on #8 book (Six Shades of Hell), and I'm working on some of the edits for the 5th one (Vampire Crescendo). Meanwhile the fourth book, Vampire Caprice, is now available as an eBook on both Amazon and Smashwords.

While Sookie Stackhouse was a bartender with telepathic abilities, Sabrina Strong (heroine in my books) is a touch clairvoyant. Eventually, Sabrina's abilities become more magical. She receives a mystical ring that can not only thwart vampire thrall, but she can pick up a vampire and slam him into the wall--without touching him/her. Something she would need down the road because, let's face it, the vampire world is a very dangerous place. She comes to understand that she is the sibyl, an ancient vampire huntress. And she has been given the Dagger of Delphi, which basically does the work for her.

Eventually, Sabrina also learns to travel ley lines. [Ley lines are lines linking the holy places and sites of antiquity--but more than that, they may also exist beyond the Earth, in outer space, and it's thought by some scientists that humans could tap them and travel to other worlds]. Sabrina does learn to tap leys and she does go into another world in Vampire Nocturne. Here she finds that vampires rule and the original Drakulya (the Impaler), rules as king. This is what I like to refer to as my Steampunk novel.

In a way, my writing is similar to Charlaine Harris'. It's on the same level, but I've incorporated a little more horror into my novels. And, Sabrina works for a vampire magnate, Bjorn Tremayne. But eventually marries a master rogue, Vasyl, (who has been with her since she was a child, but she didn't know it). Introduces himself eventually in first and second books--he is her dream vampire. Nevertheless, Sabrina finds it hard to resist Tremayne when he corners her a couple of times in the above book, Vampire Caprice. And I hope I don't give too much away, but when I worked on edits for that book, I realized there is a lot of heavy breathing going on with Sabrina enjoying a lot of male attentions. Not that the other books lack this, but as a heads-up, these are not your teenager's romance books.

If you've been hunting for a good read, and would like to check out my series, I've reduced the price on both the first and second ebooks to $0.99. I've decided to do this in honor of my 60th birthday, this month. So, these two books will be on sale up through August 31st.

Vampire Caprice ~ meaning and book synopsis

From Dictionary: Caprice
1). An impulsive change of mind.
2). An inclination to make such changes.
3). Music. A capriccio from Italian capriccio--"head with hair standing on end" - hence horror...

Hello, my pretties. Yes, the daffodils are making brave attempts at showing us their bright, sunny faces, but we are still trying to push away winter temperatures and that pesky "s" word from the daily forecast. For now, it's acting more like March, but I'll take it.

I've been hard at work on the fourth book in the Sabrina Strong series, Vampire Caprice. As the definition above indicates it will be anything but dull.

I've come up with a synopsis, here. It might be a tad long, but would like some comments on it. And all comments are welcomed, just make sure you understand spamming me will not get you published.
cover by Lucy Pireel

The big vampire, Bjorn Tremayne, is up to his old tricks again. He has lost his reign and has now become a rogue, and this doesn't sit well with him, but he's going to do something that will change this situation. Dark World has set a bounty on Sabrina's head because she wouldn't mate with him, but he has come up with a way to trick her into bed with him. The only thing is he needs to get her away from the only vampire who protects her—Vasyl.
Sabrina's agenda was to enjoy a pleasant Thanksgiving with family, and no vampires, Nephilim, werewolves, or demons to interrupt it. Unfortunately a demon in the guise of her Grandmother Rose has decided to attack her at this family gathering. Bill Gannon, her neighbor and Nephilim, has gotten an invite to Thanksgiving, but just when he's about to save Sabrina from the demon, who walks in, kills the demon and whisks Sabrina off in his cool Super Snake Mustang but Tremayne... with the help of leprechaun Rick.
After the melee in Sabrina's brother's house, Tremayne convinces Sabrina she isn't safe from demons who are after her for the bounty on her head—dead or alive—and manages to talk her into running.
Vasyl, meanwhile, has fought off Tremayne's minions, but has lost Sabrina, and now it's daybreak. He has to chase Sabrina across the Midwest, knowing that Tremayne's ultimate goal is to mate with her—before he, himself, has had a chance to consummate his marriage to Sabrina.
In order to complete his duty of finding the sibyl, Bill Gannon must chase after Sabrina, and find some way to talk her into having his children in order to save the whole Nephilim race.
While all of these men are vying for Sabrina's attentions, something called an Undead, who feeds on souls, seeks Sabrina—the last sibyl—for his own diabolical needs. And he is very determined to find her.

Vampire's Day Soiree Today!

Hey, I understand it s the 3rd anual Vampire's Day Soiree! Go check out our host Holly's Horrorland, and comeback here because I've joined in all the fun, here at Got Vampire? I've got an excerpt from the up coming next book in the Sabrina Strong series below you might want to read.

For some women it takes a life time to find someone who loves you and you love them back. Rarely do we get more than one guy vying for our attentions.

But in the case of my lead character, Sabrina Strong, in the Sabrina Strong series, seems like you can throw a rock and hit a guy who is after her.

The fourth book Vampire Caprice, which is coming out this year, her problems just multiply by four. She's married to Vasyl, but they've had some arguments lately, and Mr. Tremayne is lending a hand in trying to keep the two apart. (for another excerpt from the book hop on over to Lorelei's Muse, but read this one first)

Here two of them are arguing over who had dibs on her. If you've read the first 3 books, you know who Dante and Vasyl are. Let's take a peek, shall we?
A millisecond later, I felt the molecules around us disperse and then a dark form appeared at the foot of my bed. It was Dante dressed all in black—black pants, black tee and boots. Almost like he had always dressed while alive, only right now he seemed to be more powerful, more lethal and more feral than he had been in life. Odd that I had not noticed this before. But then, we had been alone—except for the time he first appeared and saved me from the vampires in Targoviste Castle—and possibly he needed to be this way as he stood in the same room with a powerful vampire.
Straightening, Vasyl became ridged. “You invade, shifter,” he said in a deadly tone.
I killed two tonight,” Dante reported. “But one got away.”
Nikki,” I said.
Thank you for your report. You may leave us,” Vasyl said to him.
I love her as much as you,” Dante snarled.
Sacrebleu!” Vasyl swore. “My love has suffered and endured nearly two thousand years! You have known her for only a month or so, thus you have no right to claim her. Besides, we are married.”
My head and eyes snapped up to take him in. Images of that night when I'd halted the wedding came to me. The minister had pronounced us man and wife. I had a ring on my left hand and couldn't help but look down at it.
We are married, right?” I asked.
You signed the document, before the ceremony, and we were pronounced man and wife before you ran out of the hall,” Vasyl reminded me.
I wasn't sure,” I said wincing apologetically.
I didn't know this,” Dante said, throwing me an accusing glare.
I just sort of forgot?” I coughed, my hand clutching my side from a sudden stitch. I wasn't acting, but it suited the moment and changed the subject dramatically.
I can heal her,” Dante offered.
Vasyl glared at him. “You?”
I am—or was—a shaman in life. In my spirit form I can heal her much faster and easier than a human doctor can.” He spoke quietly, and he didn't sound boastful.
I have given her my blood. She is healing now,” Vasyl claimed.
That will help quicken it. Let me check her.”
Vasyl stood in the way.
Oh, for God's sakes let Dante check me out. My ribs might be broken.” The pain was lessening by small degrees even as I spoke.
Vasyl stepped aside, but wasn't happy. I could tell. He crossed his arms and went into his defiant stance like always.
Dante moved gracefully around the bed and came up beside me. His hair in that odd, loose braid he wore before. I now saw his hair was held by bands of gold. Looking down at me, his hand moved toward my side. His gaze seemed to cover every inch of me, as though they could see inside my skin.
You have pain here?” The ends of his long fingers touched my side very lightly.
I nodded. “But it seems to be going away.”
Vasyl made a sniff.
Holding his hands over my side, not touching me, he then closed his eyes, breathed in and then out, seeming to concentrate for several heartbeats.
Shoulders relaxed, his hand moved away and he opened his eyes. “The ribs were only cracked. They are healing, now. You must rest.” He glanced up at Vasyl. “She must not be moved from this bed for at least the next six hours. Your blood is healing her, as is her werewolf blood. After the pain is gone, she can move or be moved. I suggest she stay here for twenty-four hours.”
Very well. I will stay with her for the duration.” He looked around the room. “There are no windows here, so I will stay with her.” Vasyl remained in that defiant stance of his and lifted his head at Dante. “I know that you were lovers, in life. You have also been with her intimately as an Undead. I will not allow that any longer,” Vasyl said from the other side of my bed.
It is true. We have been together,” Dante said, looking down at me. His lips bent just a little in a slight smile.
No more will you be with her in that way,” Vasyl said. “I forbid it.”
I think it's up to her. Isn't it?” Dante argued.
I tried to mount a protest as the argument above me grew in volume.
I spent half my human life and all of my vampire life in a quest to find her. Do you think for one second I would allow an Undead to touch her?”
Already have.” Dante lifted his eyes to him and the smirk told the whole story.
I know I can do nothing to you, but she will refuse you, if I must thrall her into doing so,” Vasyl said more defiantly.
Stop! Stop it now!” I growled, and then my teeth gripped my lower lip from the pain. Whenever I took a breath it hurt. Then the pain subsided and I spoke. “For your information, I love Dante,” I said to Vasyl.
Dante smirked.
And I can't help it but I feel just as strongly toward Vasyl. I'm married to him. So, I have to stay true to him now.”
Dante's face grew somber.
I think you're both being a little ridiculous,” I chastised. “It's like you're arguing over a thing. I'm not a possession!” I reminded, and looked at both of them. “But Vasyl has been in my life longer. He found and protected me when I was a child. I know that he loves me. And, because you never even told me you loved me while you are alive—” A stitch made me stop short as I grimaced.
Cherie,” Vasyl said softly. “Rest.”
No. Listen to me, the both of you. You are both going to simply put up with each other because I'm not about to decide who I love more, nor will I tell Dante to never come and visit me again. That's like asking me which arm I like better, and to cut the other one off. That's how ridiculous this is!”
Dante hung his head, and his black tresses hung like a curtain over his face. Then he drew his head up and looked at me. “I am, as always, and will be, in love with you, Sabrina. You will never be able to change that.”
No. I just wished you would have told me when you were alive. At least you could have gone on to your reward.”
We can never go back in time. So, I will honor you, now, my lady”—he bowed deeply—“as your servant. You are now my priestess and I will obey your command; whatever you wish, it is my will to obey.”
I actually do need something,” I said. “You're the only one who can go and find it, probably.”
Tell me.”
My backpack. It's still at the park. It's brown leather.” It had everything in it that I needed. “The Dagger is in it, so you're the only one who can go and get it.” That and a few more important things. Like my birth control.
He paused, and the look he gave me was indescribable.
Oh, and find out if Chris is alright,” I added with a wince.
Then he bowed again, stepped backward two steps turned, and was gone.

A moment later, a weariness fell over me and I closed my eyes. Vasyl's blood was working on me, and I drifted off. I dreamt. But these were not my dreams... they were Vasyl's.
Hope you have a wonderful Valentines Day. I've had a nibble from my heart box already!

A Love Bite Wednesday

Soft light in the room threw shadows across the contours of his face, making it look somewhat like a piece of artwork. I only then realized I hadn't had the opportunity to really take in the details of his high cheekbones, the curve of this lips, almost straight nose, the arch of brows.

His lips captured mine, then his kisses traveled down my neck. I arched my back availing my neck to him. His arms like steel bands pulled me to him. I waited for him to sink his teeth into me, super aware of the throb at my womanhood....

~*~
Well, this was something I found on a piece of paper, undated. But I do believe it belongs to something I wrote in my up-coming book Vampire Caprice. The vampire is none other than the seven foot tall Bjorn Tremayne, snuggling up with--who else?--Sabrina Strong. They are so wrong for each other, I love putting them together. And this book puts them together in the bedroom, eventually, even though Sabrina has been avoiding this--for a lot of reasons, because if he bites her, he will not be able to stop drinking her blood (because it's just so delicious, of course!)

I'll bring you more little tidbits from the fourth novel, just a tease hear and a tease there. I'm evil that way!

WIP Wednesday ~Vasyl's Awakening

I've been busy working on my next book in the Sabrina Strong series, Vampire Interlude. It's currently being read by my beta reader, and when I worked on this one scene my reader said it was the most graphic piece I'd written to date.

This is how Vasyl became a vampire. Have a look. I hope to have this fourth book out at end of the year.

Somewhere in France 1000 A.D.

He was not dead. He was sure of it.
A heartbeat resounded. It came as a hard knock on Vasyl's chest wall. But there was only the one. That's strange.
While waiting to hear the next one, he lay in darkness, the scent of soil, loam and molding leaves sharp in his nose. Underground? He wiggled his fingers. Yes. He moved his feet. He existed. I am alive!
Another heartbeat came. One singular thu-thump in his chest. Then again, nothing.
He languished in the darkness thinking what a fool he was to have asked for this. As if it would be better than being killed by his arch enemies, the Nephilim, who wanted to take the Dagger of Delphi from him and destroy it. They did not want to be killed by it once the sibyl appeared again in the world.
Where was Camerlengo? He must come for him. He was somewhere in the woods. Possibly near the cemetery. Certainly he would come for him soon! He must!
Panic rushed through him like weighted doom. This only brought on an ache which throbbed in his head. Pain built and surged down through his body, and throughout his limbs. He groaned with these changes to his body. His insides churned, as though a beast were eating at him from the inside out. He thought it felt like the worst hunger pains he'd ever known. But even as a priest, he had readily been able to ask for food wherever he went, and appease this meager needs. This was beyond hunger. But what was it? Illness? A warmth filled him, becoming hot, then he became chilled once again. He gripped at his stomach, shuddered and moaned, trying to keep his sounds to a minimum.
No. This was not mere hunger in the sense that he was used to. It hurt. His head pounded, and a strange sensation tickled his groin. Arousal? He could not understand this. He was virginal, and had never had this overpowering need before.
The terrible gnawing in his stomach, pared with his pounding head, and his sexual desires coming full bore was more than he could handle. He wanted to stop it all, now! Make it stop! But how?
He shifted his shoulders, using his hands to roll over onto his side. His movement caused loud crackling all around him—as loud as cannon fire to his ears. Whatever it was covering him was not heavy, and not dirt. Right before the vampire, Camerlengo, had agreed to turn him Vasyl had made him promises to not bury or put him in a coffin. Oddly, he remembered nothing of the transition, or the moments after the initial bite at his wrist. All the rest of it was gone. No memory of what happened. His friend had said he would not die.
The vampire had not lied to him. But the pain was more than he could bare.
Deep woodsy earth scents of worms, centipedes, pill bugs and other small creatures which lived in the soil filled his nose.
Movements came slow, weakness in his limbs limited his ability to move quickly. The pounding in his head felt like someone taking a hammer and hitting him repeatedly. When finally he struggled to push the something that covered him away, it came away like a crash of cymbals, accompanied by the smell of decaying leaves.
Opening his eyes, he blinked at his surroundings. Everything looked oddly cold and alien. Objects, such as trees and bushes were in varying degrees of grays and deep blues, and black. Above him a network of bare oak tree limbs laced across his vision of the stars above him. The stars glowed strangely, too. Some were yellow, some red and others brilliant blue, and some with halos around them, and yet they looked different. He thought he could actually reach out and touch them, they seemed so close. For a moment he was mesmerized by everything he saw. Until the pounding resumed in his head, and he couldn't ignore it.
Working to push to his feet—despite the fact his legs felt like ropes, rather than flesh and bone—he stumbled once and then rose unsteadily. Wobbling, he gained his feet, ungainly, like a new born foal.
Shooting pain seared through his head. He cried out, seizing it with his hands. His voice reverberated and then was lost in the immense wood. The strange sensations traveled through his body once again and ended with an unbearable throbbing at his groin. His needs were confusing, but equal in intensity. If he did not satisfy both, he was certain to go mad, or perhaps die.
Harsh crackling and rushing filled his ears. The noise was too loud, and he had to cover his ears. Despite the all-consuming pain, he was hyper-aware of someone's approach, and growled a warning.
Father Françios! It is I, Camerlengo.” The threat he had felt eased from him.
Here, Camerlengo!” Wetness slid down his cheeks. He wiped the tears with the back of his hand.
Father. Here I am, my friend!” A large man appeared through a gap in the trees, he could see him clearly as though it were mid-day.
This pain! I hurt!” Françios said holding one hand to his stomach, another to his head. “What is this terrible pain I endure? Am I sick?”
No. You have just ascended. The changes are taking place in your body. Everything changes; your needs change,” he explained, drawing up along side him in his tattered robes, his dark hair hanging in ringlets around his ears and over his brow.
He bent over, hands covering his ears. “I am going mad! Make it stop! Make it stop!” Françios cried. A new scent stopped him. Something wonderful. Something he must have. Where is it? Françios rose to look for the source of this scent.
You must take sustenance,” Camerlengo said. “I have brought you something that will help your change along.” With that, he drew up a small woman from behind him. Because Camerlengo was a large man he hadn't seen her. Blonde, and young, wearing a blue dress, or was it a night rail? He must have been pulling her along. He pushed the woman forward. She stood between the two of them. A look of confusion wrinkled her forehead when she looked from Camerlengo and himself. Odd little noises leaked from her lips. He noticed she shivered and the starlight cast fascinating shadows over her fair features. Fear. He could practically taste it on the air. It had a sweet, coppery essence that seemed to magnify his needs all the more. His finger tips itched, his mouth burned in torment until he opened his mouth to allow the prickle of agony at his gum-line to ease the ache there. He let out an in-human sound, like a beast, aware of the fangs that had drawn down out of his upper mouth. Thus equipped instinctively he moved forward, toward the small woman. Barely a woman, she must have been fifteen or sixteen.
I will keep her thralled for you. Take what you need of her,” Camerlengo encouraged.
A deep anticipation came over Françios. With a growl, he fell upon the small, young woman. Fingers grasping her by the shoulders, he made a quick movement to twirl her around. Her blonde hair fell away from one side of her neck and he plunged his fangs into her flesh. Her coppery-sweet essence slid into his mouth and he drew on the wound he'd made to drink more deeply. But it did not come fast enough. Not fast enough to ease the torment inside him.
Ease up, Françios,” Camerlengo said. But his words had no effect on him.
Françios held the girl tightly to himself, finding the small mounds of her breasts pleasant to hold. They fit into his palms perfectly.
That's when the fire in him slammed his insides, and he could no longer stand it. He pressed the girl down to the ground, threw up her skirts, and with much fumbling entered her roughly.
She screamed at first, but was so weakened by the loss of blood, she could do nothing to thwart his fiendish and cruel enjoyment of her. When he was done, he covered her throat with his mouth, bit hard, and tugged. A gush of crimson flowed and he buried his face into the gore.
Satiated, he drew back and looked at the blood soaked dress, her legs spread from his taking her. His horrific attack on her pricked whatever humanity he had left.
Mon Deu! What have I done?” he cried out and jumped to his feet. “I can't stand this abomination! This-this evil thing I've become!” He crumpled, buried his face into his hands and wept. After a moment, his sire touched him on the shoulder.
Enough, Françios. We must bury her. Hide our evidence.”
I cannot. No! I must take her to her parents and admit my sins. I deserve punishment of the harshest degree for what I have done!”
No. Come away. Understand me, my friend. You are not human. Nothing they can do to you short of burning or decapitation will kill you, and nothing they do will harm you. You are basically indestructible.” He paused a moment. “This was your first night. Your first feeding. It always goes badly for the soul we take. Almost always someone is killed by our feeding lust.”
No! I cannot do this! I must destroy myself somehow!”
You cannot. A vampire has too strong a will to exist.”
Françios shot to his feet again. “I am an abomination! I killed! How can I live with that on my conscious?”
Camerlengo grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him hard and said, “You came to me, telling me why you needed to complete your mission to keep the dagger safe and find the sibyl, because if you did not the Nephilim would take over the world. You said you would risk everything—everything—for her. Everything, including your own soul! This is what you said to me!” They stared at one another for long moments.
Finally Françios relented. His muscles relaxed. “Of course, my friend. You are right.” He drew his hand to his forehead. “I'd forgotten my mission. Thank you for reminding me.”
Tomorrow it will go better. I will show you.” He grasped him by the arm and drew him along the forest of oaks. “You must now choose a name.”
But I have a name.”
No. That was your human name. You will no longer go by that.” He drew him along. “Come, into the cemetery. You can choose a name from a marker, if you wish.”
They stepped out of the woods into a partial clearing where grave markers lined the field. They walked quietly through the cemetery.
Here is one,” Camerlengo said, pointing to a fine marble one chiseled recently.
But Françios looked to another. “This is a fine name.” he moved before a marker and Camerlengo joined him.
Vasyl Datsyuk?”
No. Just Vasyl. It's perfect.”
It is Ukranian, I think,” he said. “Ancient Greek it would be pronounced Basileios.”
Just Vasyl.”
Basil is another form of this name,” Camerlengo said. “Would you not like that, instead?”
No. I like this one. No one would know who Vasyl is, if they heard it. I will be able to stay hidden from those devils for years to come.” He drew up looking into the heavens. “Yes. From now on, my name will be known as Vasyl!”

Sabrina Strong on Killing Demons

Hi. My name is Sabrina Strong, I'm a touch clairvoyant, and that's not all. I'm now a sibyl. My job? I'm supposed to take out demons, vampires and off-spring of Nephilim. But you know, it's a bit hard when your friends are vampires. Well, not all my friends are vampires, of course. And a few vampires have become my enemies. And one certain off-spring of of Nephilim is trying to hit  on me. But I'm here to talk about demons and vampires today.

No. You won't find me carrying a wooden stake and punching it into a vampire's heart, and then they turn to dust. Please. I think that's been over done, for one thing. For another, it's just so messy. And plus--how the hell do you find the right place to puncture the chest to get to the heart when the vampire might not want to sit still for that?

Nope. I got something better, anyway. I happen to have the only thing that kills on it's own and it's made of pure silver. It's called the Dagger of Delphi. It's ancient--at least 2,000 years old, wielded by one of the first sibyls. It will kill a demon right now. It will also kill any off-spring of Nephilim. And really when you get down to tacks, if anything is stabbed in the heart you've pretty much got a funeral to go to. Right?

But vampires are a bit tricky. They are the hardest buggers to kill. You see, the dagger won't kill them right away. It poisons them from the inside out--so I've been told--and it's a slow death for the vampire. So, if I stab a vampire with this dagger of mine--or if it does it for me (because it has a mind of its own), the vampire lives long enough to send his minions after me. Not fun.

But demons, yeah, that's another thing entirely. They die right away. In this latest book, however, I have no idea what these "Dreadfuls" are who stand in the corner of a room, making the person they're hovering over until they become very ill, bed-ridden and die. You see, I'm on a different planet in Vampire Nocturne. And the vampires here are at least half human. Well, I don't want to go into an explanation on how that happens here. You'll just have to believe me. So when I stab them, it's quite possible they don't stay down very long.

But the Dreadfuls do. In fact they sort of implode upon themselves and it takes me a little while to figure out they are not actually demons, but manifestations of someone who is sending these things out in order to kill off people they don't happen to like.

So, when the human population of Wallachia (where the king of vampires dwells--yes, it's Drakulya aka The Impaler who has somehow managed to get his head back on his shoulders and becomes a vampire after his battle with the Turks), learns I can kill these Dreadfuls, they want me to come to their homes and take them out. I'd become an exterminator, in that sense. But I've got a sneaky suspicion who is sending these things out and I've got to find a way to prove it, or I might not live to see tomorrow.

But I don't have time for this! I have to find my cousin, Lindee, who was sucked through a portal, into this other world. I have to find her before Drakulya, or some other vampire does, because a human's destiny on this world where vampires rule is either of two things: become a Blood Dame, or Brood Mare--women who allow vampires to mate with them in order to have more off-spring (that's what they call them there).

So, I've got my hands full. Not only that I've got the son of Drakulya, Jett, who is into me. As well as his cousin, Drachen--who is a dreamboat, but really too young for me. Jett is handsome, older and a sexual vampire. While Drachen would rather have my blood, I'd rather jump Jett's bones. Really. I can say that here, can't I?

The SPARKLY-FREE VAMPIRE SITE

I had to laugh the other day when I spoke to a student on my bus who I handed a business card to for links to my books and my website. I said, "My books don't have sparkly vampires in them." and he said "Thank God!"

So, for those of you who DO NOT LIKE YOUR VAMPIRES TO SPARKLE, this is the place for you!
Photo: This one makes me think of Dante, after he died and came back as an Undead.
This picture makes me think of Dante who dies in 2nd book, but comes back at end of the third as an Undead
And if you like a heavy dose of romance, forget it. I don't do romance novels spiked with vampires who can walk around in the daylight. Nope. I go for a more traditional vampire character. One who needs to be invited into a house, and who need to drink blood, and  yet I've managed to give my vampires a brain where they've figured out how to get their blood from living donors, and not kill anyone, or let the general public figure out that there are vampires around. Especially those who live in Tremayne Towers in Chicago.

My vampire novels follow the main character Sabrina Strong, a touch clairvoyant, into her suddenly exciting adventures working for a vampire magnate, Bjorn Tremayne. You like your vampires to be calculating, somewhat cold, and who can thrall with a glance, this guy's for you. Once Tremayne sets his sights on Sabrina, no other vampire under him can claim her. Not even the vampire who she imprinted with.

But if you think Sabrina winds up with either of these vampires, you're wrong. I don't write romance where two star-crossed lovers wind up together. Life doesn't go that way and I think the mystery, danger and all the other action out-weighs the romantic thread.

However, one character who she meets during this first episode, Vampire Ascending, and is not a vampire, but a shift-changer, is assigned to her as her protector. Dante Badheart, the Native American shaman who works for Tremayne is given the assignement to protect Sabrina 24/7, because someone is trying to kill her while she is trying to use her clairvoyant powers to learn who killed Tremayne's wife.

In the second book, Vampire's Trill, things begin to really come together on who kidnapped Sabrina's best friend, Jeanie Woodbind, as she embarks of the task of learning exactly what the wife of Tremayne's brother is up to, since they are certain she was behind his and Letitia's death. But when Dante returns to his native land to try and heal from shifting into a mouse, and then back to a human too fast, Sabrina gets visions of him in a way that points toward his passing. And I won't give away the exciting ending, as she deals with two people she's known all her life, and become something quite scary and unexpectedly want to kill her.

The tale continues in third book, Vampire Nocturne, which will have an early January release date. And I'm very excited, as this book has Sabrina going into another world, and it has a lot of Steampunk in it. This one will be slightly more romantic than the last, but not in any way loosing the edgyness of the frist two. Hope you'll stop by after the new year to check it out!

Demons, Daemons

~from the dictionary:
1. A devil or evil being; especially, in the New Testament, an unclean spirit that possesses and afflicts a person.

I guess that is as good a description as we are all familiar with. It also is (2.) a persistently tormenting person, force, or passion.

Okay. But what do they look like? Do they look like us? Or are they different looking?

I've got books that have depictions of demons in them. Some resemble bats, rats, snakes, and a wild combination of just about every creature, including man.

So, as a writer who dreamed up new/different worlds, I had to come up with some ideas as to what demons might look like. Maybe some looked human enough. Others, not so much.

In the second book, Vampire's Trill, my main character, Sabrina Strong meets a few demons. One is a Nelapsi demon, and considered an ancient relation to vampires.
Excerpt:

I wasn't entirely over my anger when I heard Rick say quietly, "That's a Nelapsi.”

Nelapsi? Really? What is a Nelapsi?”

A really ugly demon. Well, actually it's part demon and part vampire. But then they're closely related.”

Got cha.”

That was when I saw the attacker's face. His head was totally bald, and red eyes held me in their thrall, the pupils were cat-like. He was eerily handsomein a demonic way. The ugly parts were more the two snake tails and giant bat wings.

Your woman?” he asked Tremayne, his smile slanted sinisterly, filled with sharp teeth. Fangs in both the lower and upper jaw.

Get your own, you slimy asshole!” Rick slung bravely.

The creature's smile broadened, but he narrowed his eyes at Rick.

You bring a leprechaun and a lovely human female with you here? Bjorn, you must have lost some brain cells in the centuries you've been on earth.”
But in other places the demon isn't quite so hard on the eyes.
That would be Jacob in another section of this scene:

I entered the room, and the women followed me in. The walls were made of masoned stone, the floor looked like slate. Inside, my guides took me into another room where there was an old style lounge, red velvet covering it, one end slightly higher than the other. I recognized it as a fainting couch. Before I could throughly take in my surroundings, the women were touching my clothes, trying to undress me. I jumped back, and they looked confused. They said something to me, and I tried to explain that I didn't need their help, but they couldn't understand. Obviously, we had a language barrier.

Concern rippling their delicate brows, they spoke, slightly frantic, to one another, and then one of them scurried through another doorwaythis one had green veils over itand in a moment, a man stepped out. He wore a light gray robe with his hands tucked inside the deep sleeves. His face was so gorgeous I was stunned mute.

He spoke a single word to them that must have translated “leave,” and they darted through the green, curtained door and disappeared.

Welcome. I am Jacob. You are a stranger here, yet I welcome you happily,” he said in a nice, mellow voice. “Your name is Sabrina?”

Yes.” I was also stunned he knew my name, but, I reminded myself, I was in another realm.

He made a sudden intake of air, his head tilted slightly, and he blinked those brilliant blue eyes. A look of surprised delight lit across his face. “You are the sibyl?”

Oh, uh, yeah,” I said, realizing this might be significant, but I was thinking of the demons who wanted to kill me earlier. I bit my lip watching what he would do, my hand on the laser's handle.

He made a low bow, his long, black hair falling into his face as he straightened and he had to shake it. “I welcome you, mistress. Please, understand that we only wish to give you a retreat, allow you to bathe andforgive us if our ways are not your waysbut you must dress in something more... appropriate?” He was looking me over. I'd noticed that everyone here (except for Naamah, who was actually nude), was in either a dress or a robe.

Oh, sure. No problem,” I said, relief flooding me.

This way,” he said, hand outstretched toward the next curtained-off threshold.

I went ahead through the entry and found myself in a small, low-ceilinged room with a sunken bath that probably resembled the one Cleopatra herself plunged into. Decorative lanterns cast golden light all along the walls, and their gentle glow reflected in the water. I was happy to see this was a private bath.

Disrobe, mistress, and bathe. I will return with your new attire.”

I watched him duck out. I stood with indecision. This situation sent red flags up all over the place, but the water was scented, and I could tell it would feel sooooo good. Worried I'd be in the middle of pulling off my underwear when Jacob returned, I quickly stripped, letting everything lay wherever it fell. I located the steps that descended into the pool. Poking my toes in, I found that it was a perfect bath temperature. In a moment, I was neck-deep and swishing around in my own private hot tub. Eventually I found that there were a couple of little ledges to sit and settle back on. Luxuriating, I leaned back with my eyes closed. Nice. All I needed was a glass of Moscato, and a hunk of chocolate and I could forget where I was.

My eyes snapped open at the sound of water parting with someone entering the pool. I saw Jacob, totally nude, striding into my personal hot tub. ©Lorelei Bell
Well, yummy! I felt that the contrast between the two demons would give you an idea of the types of demons I dream up. And just in case you aren't sure what Jacob is---hint, hint, he gives pleasure, and -bus is part of his name, and there is a female version of this. Can you guess what type of demon he is?
